Title, description & tag checker

Counted the way YouTube counts.

Paste in your title, description and tags. See them against YouTube’s limits, counted the way YouTube counts them (which isn’t always the obvious way), and see where your title gets cut off in search and beside other videos. Nothing leaves your browser.

0/100
  • A title is required.
0/5,0000/5,000 bytes

No hashtags.

0/500

Separate with commas. YouTube counts the commas, and two extra for any tag with a space in it.

Limits from YouTube Help (video settings, hashtags) and the YouTube Data API reference, checked 2026-10-13. Title previews use YouTube’s font and the sizes and widths measured on YouTube that day; YouTube changes its layout from time to time.

The limits, and how they’re counted

  • Title: 100 characters, without “<” or “>”.
  • Description: 5,000. YouTube Help says characters; its API says bytes. In UTF-8 an accented letter like á is two bytes and an emoji four, so a description in Irish, French or full of emoji can be under 5,000 characters and still over 5,000 bytes. Tools that upload or schedule through the API may then refuse it.
  • Tags: 500 characters in all. The commas between tags count, and a tag with a space in it counts two more, as if it were in quotation marks: “video editing” costs 15, not 13.
  • Hashtags: no more than 60 across the title and description. Over that, YouTube ignores all of them, not just the extras.

Where titles get cut

Search results and suggestions show a title in a fixed number of lines at a fixed width, so where it’s cut depends on the letters, not a character count: a title of narrow letters fits more than one of wide ones. The previews lay your title out in YouTube’s font at the sizes and widths YouTube uses, so the words people actually see before the “…” are the ones to get right.
